Android 17 beta 3 is now live, bringing the OS to Platform Stability. It is available to all eligible Google Pixel phones now, and packs in quite a lot, like the ability to hide app labels, support for the RAW14 image format, and a few cosmetic changes. But the biggest addition in Android 17 beta 3 is “Bubbles,” which changes the way you multitask. Though we have seen it before, it is only rolling out now, or rather, fully integrated.
Multitasking on Android 17 Beta 3 is now seamless with Bubbles
This isn’t an entirely new feature, as Google Messages offers chat bubbles on Android. But what’s new in this version is that the premise has been expanded. With this update, apps beyond Messenger can now use the “bubbles” function. This can be useful for multitasking on large-screen devices, like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The feature essentially lets you run any app in a floating window that minimizes into a bubble when you tap it. This will also improve your multitasking experience.
To run an app in bubble mode, long-press an app and tap the new bubble icon, which looks like a minimize button. More apps can be added to easily switch between and recall from any point on the screen. To close a bubbled app, just drag and drop it to the bottom of the screen. This is much like how you dismiss a conversation with bubbles in Google Messages.
You can run any app in bubble mode
As said, you can run any app in the bubble mode. It doesn’t seem like there’s a limit to how many apps you can bubble. The ability to run apps in a mini-window and seamlessly minimize them with just a tap is definitely a neat multitasking experience on Android. In fact, it sounds better than switching between multiple full-screen apps or using split-screen. The latter limits how much you see on the screen. Since it’s now live with Android 17 beta 3, it is likely to stay around throughout the rest of the beta phase.
