The 8BitDo 64 2.4G is one of two new accessories from famed and well-loved gaming peripheral brand 8BitDo, and as the name suggests, it focuses on the N64 while managing to support a few more platforms. This makes it a versatile piece of gaming tech that you can enjoy with more than just Nintendo’s old console.
The other accessory that 8BitDo launched today is called the Retro Receiver, and it’s a little 2.4GHz receiver for the N64. It will also work with Windows 10 after version 1903, and Windows 11, as well as the Analogue 3D and any consoles with an N64 controller port.
Basically, this is what you grab if you want to play your N64 with a wireless controller like the Xbox controller or DualSense, or any one of 8BitDo’s wireless controllers, which the company says are all compatible. As for its Windows compatibility, 8BitDo doesn’t seem to explain how this works. The receiver does have a USB-C port on the end, so it’s possible that you plug it in with the included USB cable and then your controller can connect to it wirelessly.

The 8BitDo 64 2.4G controller has Hall Effect joysticks
It’s become almost like a ritual for most aftermarket controllers to include Hall Effect joysticks, and there’s a good reason for that: They’re a lot more resistant to drift. With the 8BitDo 64 2.4G, drift will be the last thing you have to worry about because it has Hall Effect sticks. The controller also includes wear-resistant metal joystick rings. While this controller doesn’t have the original N64 shape, if you were never super fond of that controller design, this might be more suited to your tastes.
It’s not too different from 8BitDo’s older N64 controllers, but it does change a few things. For one, there’s no more Bluetooth in here. You either need to be able to wirelessly connect the controller to a compatible console or platform, or plug it in with a cable. It also now has memory function support.
The retro receiver supports a wide variety of controllers, including the PlayStation DualShock 4, DualSense, DualSense Edge, the Xbox wireless controller, the Wii U controller, the Xbox Elite Series controllers. If you want the controller and receiver as a package, it’s $39.99. If you just want the receiver though, you can pick that up for $24.99. Both are available on Amazon starting on March 19.
