10 of the scariest AI villains in movie history

Tom Cruise (as Ethan Hunt) battled all sorts of villains across 29 years and eight movies, but his final (for now) nemesis, a piece of rogue artificial intelligence known simply as the Entity, came the closest to bringing him to his knees.

The Entity was part code-breaker, part spy, part weapons expert, part predictive, and part party host — every move that Ethan and his friends made seemed to have been predicted by the Entity.

In a chilling sequence in “Dead Reckoning” (2023), the IMF crew attended a party in Venice, only to find that the Entity had planned the entire thing and had been watching through the various screens.

In “The Final Reckoning” (2025), it became clear that the Entity’s plan was to hijack the entire world’s cache of nuclear weapons and trigger a catastrophic, planet-wide nuclear holocaust in order to have absolute rule over the remaining human population.

“2001,” directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, is regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, largely thanks to the lingering fear we all have of HAL.

In “2001,” HAL starts as friendly, even playing chess with the crew and keeping their spaceship, the Discovery One, running. But when HAL starts malfunctioning and faces being shut down by the human crew, it makes some downright murderous decisions.

“I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that,” remains one of the most politely terrifying things we’ve heard a movie villain say — even if HAL is just represented as a glowing red dot.

Ever since the Terminator and its computer overlord, Skynet, were introduced to audiences in 1984’s “The Terminator,” there’s been a lingering fear that a computer program that we created will someday take over.

In “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” viewers watch as Sarah Connor, a normal young woman, transforms into a lethal fighter dedicated to protecting her son, John, from the futuristic cyborg killing machines that have been sent back in time by Skynet, a self-aware AI program, to prevent him from growing up and becoming a leader in the human rebellion against the machines.

Skynet remained a threat in subsequent sequels, never giving up on its plan for world domination.

“I, Robot” takes place in an alternate future when, in the year 2035, humanity coexists with thousands of robots built to serve and protect humans. But when a mysterious robot, Sonny, goes rogue, it’s up to a robot-hating cop and a skeptical scientist to figure out that Sonny is actually trying to protect humans from VIKI, the centralized AI that controls all the robots.

VIKI, in her desire to protect humans, has decided she can override the rules meant to keep robots from attacking humans in order to save humans from themselves, by any means necessary.

In the hotly anticipated 2015 sequel to “The Avengers,” the Avengers face their biggest threat yet with a homicidal, sociopathic AI known as Ultron.

But what makes Ultron unique is that he was created by Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Bruce Banner (the Hulk) — and was only corrupted when he was exposed to all of human history, the internet, and more.

Like many AIs before him, Ultron decided that the only way to save humanity was to wipe the slate clean and start over. Ultron was so powerful that he could only be stopped by another AI, albeit a much more peaceful one, Vision.

M3GAN is an android powered by AI developed by Gemma, a high-profile roboticist at a toy company. Gemma, with her heart sort of in the right place, developed M3GAN to help her newly orphaned niece Cady deal with the loss of her parents.

But when M3GAN starts to treat everyone and everything around Cady as a threat, including Gemma, all hell breaks loose.

While it seemed like M3GAN was powered down at the end of the film, the sequel “M3GAN 2.0” showed us that it’s impossible to keep a good toy down for long.

In the universe of “The Matrix,” originally released in 1999 and followed by three sequels, the human race has been fighting with mega-powerful AI for generations. The battle is seemingly being won by the machines — humans are born and immediately plugged into a virtual reality so that machines can essentially use them as batteries.

But when Neo becomes aware of his false reality, the tide begins to turn, and the humans are given enough hope to keep fighting.

Ash, the science officer aboard the Nostromo, reveals himself to be after one thing and one thing only: the safety of the deadly alien that’s been killing off crew members.

The android isn’t interested in keeping its human crewmates alive in any capacity, which Ripley and her friends find out the hard way.

But the most enduring part of Ash is that, when his head is severed by the crew, he leaks out a milky-white substance instead of blood. It was a disturbing image then, and it remains one 47 years later.

An honorable mention also goes to Mother, the AI running the Nostromo, which transmits the orders to Ash.

The thing about David 8 is that he doesn’t lose like Ash does — this android successfully keeps the Alien alive, cons the crew of the Covenant into thinking he’s the more docile android Walter One, and is able to continue his barbaric experiments.

In “Alien: Covenant,” which is a prequel to the original films and a sequel to 2012’s “Prometheus,” David 8 has decided that humanity is an obsolete species and his project, the xenomorph, is the next step in evolution.

He has no regard for human life, and Michael Fassbender’s chilling portrayal was considered Oscar-worthy by some.

Throughout “Ex Machina,” we see Ava, a humanoid robot, consistently mistreated by her creator, Nathan. We also see her build what we think is a genuine bond with programmer Caleb.

But Ava keeps you guessing — does she actually feel something for Caleb? Is she using him to escape her creator and rule the world? Or does she want to be left alone?

Ava’s motivations are open to interpretation by the end of the film, and Alicia Vikander’s performance was critically acclaimed, earning her BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations.
