Have you ever been watching a YouTube video in landscape mode, only for it to suddenly zoom in, cutting off the edges of the frame for no apparent reason? If so, you’re not alone. The new “Auto Zoom” feature in the YouTube Android app has been a source of frustration for many users. For a while, there was no way to stop it. The good news is that it looks like YouTube has been hearing, as an option to disable “Auto Zoom” is on the way.
You’ll soon be able to disable YouTube’s “Auto Zoom” feature
If you are reading this, you may not have even encountered this issue. It’s because Auto Zoom is a new—and often unpredictable—feature. It automatically adjusts the video frame to fill the entire screen when you switch to landscape mode. The feature is an unwanted surprise, as it crops the video’s edges and removes part of the content. What makes it even more annoying is that this happens even if you have the “Zoom to fill screen” option disabled in your settings, and there is no clear pattern as to when it will activate. The only way to stop it is by tapping an on-screen button to revert to the original view.

Fortunately, the days of this unpredictable and disruptive feature might be coming to an end. It all stems from a discovery in Google‘s video platform app code by the Android Authority team. The code points to a new manual toggle that will likely be available right below the existing “Zoom to fill screen” option in the Playback section of the app‘s settings. Basically, it will allow you to manually disable YouTube’s Auto Zoom feature whenever you want.
It’s noteworthy that there is no official timeline for when this new setting will be rolled out. However, the strings discovered virtually “confirm” that a fix is on the way. For many, this will mean a triumphant return to full control over their viewing experience. Soon, you’ll be able to decide for yourself whether you want a video to fill your screen or not, without the app making the decision for you.
