After teasing it earlier this year, YouTube is now finally letting users create an AI avatar that looks and sounds like them for use in YouTube Shorts. The “Make a video with my avatar” is now rolling out to users via the main YouTube app and YouTube Create. The process involves capturing a “live selfie” by recording your face from multiple angles and voice while reading a few prompts.
YouTube rolls out AI avatar feature for Shorts globally
This process will give a photorealistic avatar that can be placed in YouTube Shorts. Each prompt-based generation can be up to 8 seconds long, though users can reportedly create multiple clips in a row. They have to set it up once, and they can retake it anytime to update their appearance.
Once the feature is available, you can create an avatar by opening the YouTube app on your phone, then tapping Create ‘+’ and tapping the Gemini spark icon on the top right corner to open the AI playground. Select “Create Video” in the top-left and then “Make a video with my avatar.” It’s also reportedly available in the Remix menu > Reimagine > Add me to this scene for eligible shorts.
Create multiple videos with the same avatar
Users will reportedly have to provide a live video selfie, where they’ll need to move their head to the right and to the left and speak the prompts that appear on the screen. This process captures the facial features and voice. Once it processes the data, YouTube will surface the AI avatar. The next step is creating a video, where you need to offer a prompt of what you want the avatar to say/do in the video in the “Describe your idea” field.
YouTube will generate the video, which you can download or upload to Shorts. You can create multiple videos with the same avatar. As for safety, YouTube will use the selfie video and voice only for avatar creation. No one else can use the avatar to create original Shorts.
You can delete the avatar at any time
Users can delete their avatar at any time. On its part, Google will automatically delete it if you don’t use it for 3 years. However, the existing videos with the avatar will remain until the actual clip is deleted. All videos with an avatar will feature watermarks and digital labels, like SynthID and C2PA. They’ll also carry YouTube’s AI-generated content disclosure.
The new YouTube Shorts feature is rolling out globally except in Europe, starting today. Users need to own a YouTube channel and be 18 or older.
