YouTube is undoubtedly one the most popular video streaming platforms, with billions of active users. The long-form content on YouTube has its own fan following. However, the platform’s short-form video format “Shorts” has gained massive viewership over the period. Now, we have some metrics that hint at the success of YouTube Shorts. Last week, during a keynote at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, announced that “Shorts” now generates 200 billion average daily views.Â
YouTube Shorts now generates massive 200 billion average daily views
The CEO announced the milestone as the Google-owned platform marked its 20th anniversary. Besides announcing the staggering daily viewership figure of 200 billion, Mohan also shared some key metrics related to YouTube Shorts, at the event. Per the announcement, nearly one billion viewers watch podcasts monthly on YouTube.Â
On top of that, over one billion hours of YouTube content are viewed daily on TV screens. Interestingly, TV screens are the primary viewing method for over 50 percent of the top 100 YouTube channels. These metrics also suggest that creators are increasingly producing content for larger screens these days. Â
Speaking of upcoming changes, YouTube will soon introduce Veo 3, Google’s video generation model, to Shorts creator later this summer. With the new AI tools, Shorts creators will soon be able to push more short-form content in a shorter time frame. Overall, this decision might help YouTube Shorts’ daily views shoot up above the current 200 billion figure.Â
When did it all start?
For the uninitiated, YouTube announced Shorts back in September 2020. The announcement came right after the Government of India (GoI) banned TikTok, citing data privacy and national security reasons. Since the format was the same, it quickly became popular among the then-TikTok creators and users. Gradually, YouTube rolled out Shorts across the globe, and it now stands as one of the rivals to TikTok and Instagram Reels.Â
