YouTube users are running into a strange bug today that sort of breaks one of the platform’s best features, which is the ability to search for content and then filter it to narrow down results. It’s a pretty common feature that’s available on all sorts of websites and not just YouTube. That being said, given the amount of content on YouTube, especially for popular topics, the filters feel like a necessity.
As it stands, the bug is presenting as a series of grayed-out filters when you bring up the filter list. You also can’t click these filters, so they just don’t work at all. It is worth noting that this bug isn’t popping up for anyone on mobile. It appears to be limited to the YouTube desktop experience. This is good news for anyone who primarily uses the platform on mobile. Anyone who primarily uses YouTube on a desktop may just want to watch videos on their phone for the time being, if they’re seeing this bug populate.
This is also hardly the only bug YouTube has come up against recently. Last week, a bug surfaced that resulted in users not being able to interact with Shorts.
The YouTube search filter bug isn’t popping up for everyone
There are numerous reports from users on Reddit complaining about this bug. Both Android Police and Android Authority are also reporting having experienced it. It’s also confirmed that not all users are seeing this bug.
I checked the YouTube website to see if filters were broken for me, and they seemed to work just fine. While they do appear grayed out, I am still able to click on all of the filters to narrow down the search results. So, just because you use YouTube on the web as opposed to the app, it doesn’t mean search filters will be broken for you. It’s worth giving it a try if you commonly use this feature.
It’s unclear what’s causing this bug to populate for some users and not others. Or what’s causing the bug at all. Browser choice doesn’t appear to have any impact whatsoever, and at least one Reddit user mentions that they’re a YouTube Premium subscriber and they still have the bug. So it doesn’t seem to be limited to free users.
