YouTube Music for Android has been going through a series of changes and improvements in recent times. For its 10th anniversary, the music streaming platform gained the “Taste Match” playlist feature. Then there’s the new music discovery feature. In the latest development, YouTube Music’s navigation may soon get a major redesign, one that moves the Search bar.
YouTube Music’s redesign is bliss for one-handed use
In a major redesign, Google is testing a new Search bar placement for YouTube Music for Android. Currently, the magnifying glass icon is present in the top-right corner between the notification bell icon and profile avatar. The redesign moves the Search bar to the bottom bar. It is now a two-tap action. While this replaces the existing “Explore” button, the page is still identical to Explore.
At the top of this new Search page, you’ll see a pill-shaped bar with the text “Search songs, artists, pod…” Besides this bar are voice and song lookup shortcuts. The Search page has New releases, Charts, Mood & genres, and Podcasts grid. We then see carousels for New albums & singles, Mood & genres, Popular episodes, Trending, and New music videos.
The change is not widely available yet
When the YouTube Music redesign is available, you’ll see a prompt that says “Search + Explore,” and you can “Tap twice to open keyboard.” This makes sense, as 9to5Google reports that the keyboard no longer opens automatically.
While it’s not clear when the new YouTube Music redesign will be made available widely, it is a handy improvement for one-handed use. One can reportedly access the Search page from the Samples section.
