YouTube, the popular video streaming platform, is changing how the dislike button works across the Shorts player. In an ongoing experiment, the platform is testing a redesigned dislike button that changes both its position and its purpose. The company says that the whole aim of the change is to streamline negative feedback.
YouTube is changing the dislike button’s position and purpose on the Shorts player
As per YouTube, the new experiment aims to merge the Dislike and Not Interested buttons. Both of these actions will now appear under a button with a thumbs-down icon. Moreover, instead of appearing alongside the Like button, the option is being moved into the three-dot overflow menu. Some users, or testers, may see it labeled as Dislike or Not interested. However, the action itself remains the same.
Pressing the button signals the algorithm to reduce similar content from the feed. This approach is not entirely new. YouTube had previously tested a new UI for Shorts, where it hid the Dislike button. But the main difference in the current experiment is that the algorithm will treat Dislike and Not interested as similar feedback or options.
YouTube says it aims to simplify negative feedback
In its statement, Google says that the two options are already being used interchangeably. Some users do not yet understand the difference between the two buttons. And hence, it aims to simplify the process with the redesign, so that users can better personalize their Shorts feed. Moreover, the tech giant says that the change follows feedback showing that users want clearer controls over what they see.
Those who enrolled in the experiment may see an optional survey once they tap on the new Dislike/Not Interested button. The survey contains some questions about why the user did not like the content. The input will be further used to polish the algorithm. As with most YouTube experiments, the rollout is limited. There’s no guarantee that the change will make its way to the stable version.
