Airplane mode on smartphones needs no introduction. This one-tap feature prevents interference with aircraft communications. Currently, Airplane mode doesn’t sync with Android phones and Wear OS watches. You’ll have to toggle it on both devices separately, but if you forget, the battery on the other device drains unnecessarily in the process of searching for a cellular signal. Google intends to solve this with a new feature that’ll sync Airplane mode across your Android phone and watch.
Airplane mode may soon sync between Android phones and watches
Android Authority reports seeing a new string in the Settings app while digging through the 2511 Android Canary release. The string labeled airplane_mode_sync_description reads “when connected by Bluetooth, Airplane mode will sync across the supported devices, such as phone and watch.”
The feature could be for phones and watches that are paired. The flag that controls is “sync_airplane_mode_with_watches.” However, the flag is not on in the latest Canary build, and the setting isn’t fully there yet. This means we don’t get to see it in action (in the image form) yet.
Google is finally catching up
We can still paint a picture of how the feature will work. Toggling the Airplane mode on your Android phone should trigger it on your connected Wear OS watch, or vice versa. This depends on the Bluetooth connection. As you’d know, Android can keep Bluetooth active even when Airplane mode is on.
While we may have to wait for some time to see it in action, it’s good news that Google is finally bringing this cross-device utility function. Apple Watch and iPhone have long synced Airplane mode via the “Mirror iPhone” feature.
