Wireless charging is a game-changer for smartphone owners
If you own a new-ish smartphone capable of wireless charging, you would probably know that it is virtually impossible to live without it once you get a taste of the sheer convenience it can provide. Apart from the wires that stick out from the wireless charging pad itself, the whole process is virtually free of any frills or fumbling that can occur due to having the wrong type of charging cord or the cord being an irregular length. Whether you are at your desk at the office, at home, or even in the car, you can set it down and forget about it; it will charge.
Though this technology is a convenient feature for smartphone users, EV owners already have a lot to deal with when it comes to charging either at home or on the go. However, the Porsche engineers at Stuttgart are showcasing a new prototype piece of cutting-edge charging technology that can bring a convenient, smartphone-like charging experience to your next EV.
Drive up to it, and forget it
At the 2025 IAA Mobility show, which is open to the public from September 9 to 14 in Munich, Porsche is showcasing a new prototype version of the upcoming Cayenne EV. While its bright, neon-colored, fluorescent wrap may be eye-catching from a mile away, it is there to demonstrate Porsche’s innovative, new wireless charging system. According to Porsche, the new, all-electric Cayenne will be its first model that can be ordered with an optional inductive charging floor plate for maximum at-home charging convenience.

In a statement, the performance car specialists say that charging the new Cayenne EV only has to be driven and parked above the special floor plate to initiate the charging process. In the pictures provided, the in-car screen shows that the Surround View parking function can assist drivers with aligning and maneuvering the Cayenne into the proper charging position.
Once it is parked above the floor plate and the parking brake is set, the Cayenne automatically drops the ride height to a level where the distance between the bottom of the car and the plate is roughly four to six inches before charging can begin.

Porsche says that this floor plate, which visually looks like a rubber anti-fatigue standing floor mat, provides 11kW of power and is a “one-box” solution, where all of the components are contained within the unit, eliminating the need to install a wall box or control unit. In addition, it is also equipped with a motion detector and foreign object detection, which can cut the charging process if any interference is detected.
Per Porsche, the wireless charging function can also be used with the My Porsche app, so that owners can track the state of charge and even utilize convenient features already possible with AC charging.
“Ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” Porsche Board Member for Development Michael Steiner said in a statement. “We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient.”
Final thoughts
Porsche Wireless Charging will initially launch in Europe in 2026 and will later be available in other markets worldwide. It is also planning the world premiere of the new Cayenne Electric at the end of 2025.
Although the charging pad only provides 11kW of charging power, it seems to be a viable, no-frills solution that could act as a replacement for a typical level 2 EV charger that owners would install in their garage. However, in an environment where certain manufacturers like Ford provide EV owners with free or discounted home EV chargers and installation, the only question that remains is the cost of all this. Porsche has not disclosed any pricing at this time, but we can’t imagine it’ll be a cheap alternative.
