The Xiaomi 17 series is finally expected to step out of China on February 28th. Unfortunately, the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max models, which house a unique secondary display on the rear, won’t be heading to global regions. This will leave us with just the vanilla Xiaomi 17 and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. In China, the latter gets a special Leica edition. While the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition might debut in global regions, it will reportedly get a different name.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra is heading to global markets, but with a different name
If you’ve been wondering whether the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition would debut in global markets. Well, the good news is, it just might. The phone stopped by at Thailand’s NBTC certification recently with the model number 25128PNA1G. But the interesting part is that the certification document shows a different name: Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi.
It’s not clear whether Xiaomi will indeed launch the phone with this name at the moment. But there have been three Leitz phones in the past. All exclusive to Japan. It seems Leica has given up on that line and replaced it with its own-branded version of Xiaomi 17 Ultra. If the naming of Leica confuses you, Ernst Leitz founded Leica, and the brand’s name is a mix of his last name and the word “camera.”
Geekbench AI reveals Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 power
The prototype of the same phone (25128PNA1G) has been spotted on the Geekbench AI platform. This reveals its on-device AI performance metrics. It shows a Single-Precision score of 1,973, a Half-Precision score of 3,322, and a Quantized score of 4,754. These scores suggest a strong on-device AI performance. The Geekbench AI listing confirms the Xiaomi flagship will feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It also reveals 16GB RAM and Android 16 OS out of the box.
Unlike the standard Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the Leica Edition is a photography-focused variant. The main difference is the camera experience and the design elements. It gets special Leica color science and filters, and hardware enhancements such as a mechanical zoom ring for a DSLR-like zoom control. This variant is slightly more expensive than the regular model in China. We assume the same might be the case globally as well.
