When you think of Samsung, you might think of the company’s smartphones. However, Samsung makes many products. Aside from phones, we’re talking about TVs, home appliances, and components used by other phone makers, including displays, memory, and camera sensors. Now, it looks like the confusion between the various Samsung divisions has lost the company $10 million in a lawsuit in the US.
Samsung loses $10 million in US lawsuit
You see, under the Samsung umbrella, there are various divisions. This includes Samsung Electronics, Samsung Engineering, Samsung SDS, Samsung Securities, and Samsung SDI. Each division serves a specific purpose and has different functions.
In 2020, Jordan Brewer from South Georgia sued Samsung after a battery in his vape exploded in his pocket, injuring him. This involved a 18650 battery made by Samsung SDI, the company’s battery division. Brewer alleges that the battery was negligently designed. He also claimed Samsung made and sold the battery but failed to warn users of the potential risks and harms associated with it.
However, in his lawsuit, Brewer named Samsung Electronics America as the defendant, not Samsung SDI. This means that while technically Samsung as a whole is responsible, Samsung SDI is the division that should have been named, not Samsung Electronics.Â
Why is Samsung on the hook?
So, how did Samsung not catch this? This took place during COVID, when employees from Samsung Electronics America were working from home. Somehow, they missed the documents sent by the court.
Under Georgia law in the US, defendants have 30 days to respond; otherwise, they’re deemed to be in default. This meant that Samsung Electronics America could not get out of this lawsuit despite its best attempts.
Ultimately, by October 202, the court ruled that the company had to pay $10.8 million in damages. The ruling was successfully appealed, but Brewer appealed that decision and won it again. Unsurprisingly, Samsung Electronics America wants to appeal this decision. However, if it fails, it will have no choice but to cough up the $10.8 million in a lawsuit that honestly had nothing to do with them in the first place.
