Alta isn’t just for adventure-seeking expert skiers, it’s a spot that can be perfect for families of all abilities. In fact, many families return here year after year during the same week, creating lasting memories. This skier-only resort is a great place for adults and children to learn from the very best and foster a lifelong love of skiing.
Lessons and Childcare at Alta
For families with younger skiers, Alta is an excellent choice. Many rave about the Alta Children’s Center, and for good reason. While Alta lacks the flashier attractions of places like Snowmass or Vail—think ice rinks, climbing walls, and waffle cabins—it more than makes up for it with a focus on quality and simplicity. Families consistently praise the ski school and childcare offerings.

Alta Children’s Center
Located slopeside, the Alta Children’s Center provides safe, reliable care for non-skiing children ages 2 months to 10 years. They coordinate seamlessly with the Alf Engen Ski School, ensuring smooth transitions for kids heading to lessons. This thoughtful setup takes the stress off ski moms and dads.
Rates are reasonable at $175 per child per day (less than $22 per hour), with a 20% discount for additional siblings. Ski lessons are priced separately, based on age and group size, and can be booked through the ski school here.

Alf Engen Ski School
The Alf Engen Ski School recently received a significant upgrade. This season, they’ve added protective bubbles to the two magic carpets, ensuring beginners stay warm and dry between runs. The Big Griz carpet is open to the public, while Little Griz is reserved exclusively for ski lessons.

Interview with Forest: A 5-Year-Old’s Perspective on Ski School
During my visit, I reconnected with friends in the lodge, including Paul M., a dedicated ski dad. He brought along his 5-year-old son, Forest, who shared his expert insights into the Alta ski school experience.
Nicole: How old are you?
Forest: Five and a half.
Nicole: Do you like skiing?
Forest: Okay.
Nicole: Did you enjoy ski school?
Forest: Yes, I did.
Nicole: Did you make any new friends?
Forest: A couple new friends.
Nicole: Did they take you into the trees while skiing?
Forest: Yes.
Nicole: And I think I saw you go over a couple of jumps. Was that fun?
Forest: Yes.
Nicole: How do you make friends at ski school?
Forest: I just ask if they want to be friends with me. If they say yes, I’m excited. If they say no, I’m not excited.
Forest also shared his dad’s secret to chairlift success: having a Starburst for every ride. Pro tip for parents—pocket some candy for an instant morale boost!
Kids at Alta Lodge
In addition to the ski school, Alta Lodge offers a well-loved kids’ program from 4:30–8:30 p.m. daily. Designed for kids ages 4–12 (though children of all ages are welcome if one-on-one supervision isn’t required), the program includes dinner and activities—perfect for keeping younger guests entertained while parents enjoy their evening.
Children can also join their families in the dining room, which maintains a casual, kid-friendly atmosphere. While the food isn’t specifically catered to children, it’s approachable and far from “weird.”
Other family-friendly features include:
- Afternoon tea: Guests can enjoy lemonade and sweet baked treats, a big hit with kids.
- Games and puzzles: The lobby sunroom is often filled with families playing board games, building with Legos, or working on puzzles.
Family Savings at Alta Lodge
Families can take advantage of the Kids Stay Free program during the Early or Spring Season. Book a four-night minimum stay in a standard room or better, and children ages 12 and under stay in your room at no additional charge, with breakfast and dinner included. With two children, this can save over $250 per night!

Alta may not have all the glitz of larger resorts, but its thoughtful approach to family skiing and its commitment to tradition make it a standout destination. Families return year after year—and it’s easy to see why.
