Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) on Thursday accused the Trump administration of excluding Democrats from a recent briefing on the U.S. strikes against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean.
Warner will speak with reporters Thursday afternoon, a day after issuing a forceful statement condemning the reported partisan briefing as “indefensible” and raising concerns about a lack of transparency around the military operation.
“Shutting Democrats out of a briefing on U.S. military strikes and withholding the legal justification for those strikes from half the Senate is indefensible and dangerous,” Warner wrote in his statement. “Decisions about the use of American military force are not campaign strategy sessions, and they are not the private property of one political party.”
The U.S. military, at the direction of President Trump, has carried out strikes against alleged drug-smuggling boats in both the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific since early September. The U.S. forces have killed 61 people, according to officials.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. EDT.
