Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will speak with reporters Wednesday morning as the government shutdown stretches into its 36th day — now the longest in U.S. history.
Schumer and Democrats in both chambers of Congress have pressed their Republican colleagues to address rising health insurance premiums associated with expiring subsidies under the Affordable Care Act — especially after open enrollment began over the weekend. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is also in crisis mode after funding lapsed. While short-term solutions have been offered, lawmakers have failed to move anything forward.
The Senate on Tuesday also blocked the GOP-led stopgap bill to reopen the government for the 14th time. Some Democrats in the upper chamber have recently signaled willingness to negotiate.
The Schumer press conference is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. EST.
