Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will honor the African American men of the 369th Infantry Regiment on Wednesday afternoon during a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony.
The fighters, known as the “Harlem Hellfighters,” were known for their service in World War I. They gained recognition as the unit assigned to fight under the 16th Division of the French army after white American soldiers refused to fight alongside them, according to the National Museum of African American History.
Former President Biden signed a law in 2021 to posthumously award the men with the coveted medal.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. EDT.
