House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House GOP leaders will speak with reporters Thursday morning as the government shutdown persists with no end in sight.
Democrats blocked the House-passed continuing resolution (CR) for the 12th time on Wednesday. As tensions rise over the stalemate — centered around health care subsidies — Republicans have eyed a new bill that could extend current funding levels until the end of next year.
Johnson has also faced pressure to bring lawmakers back to Washington despite the shutdown, including military pay as millions of federal employees are poised to miss a paycheck this week. While the Speaker has brushed off those requests until the government reopens, the Senate is set to take up a vote on payment for service members later Thursday.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is expected to join Republicans at the press conference, as airports face delays and cancellations amid the lapse in funding.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EDT.
