House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will speak with reporters Wednesday afternoon as lawmakers feel pressure to reopen the government.
Democrats, who have leaned heavily on their demand for health care concessions in the stopgap funding bill, have blocked the GOP-backed continuing resolution (CR) from crossing the finish line in more than a dozen votes. Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have advocated for Republicans to bring them to the negotiation table before conceding.
Days away from open enrollment, Republicans have floated developing their own alternative to the Affordable Care Act’s expiring subsidies that have kept health insurance premiums low for many Americans. Democrats are also weighing bills to pay military and federal workers as well as legislation to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
