House Democrats are holding a presser Wednesday morning on the embattled Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and its benefits, as funding is poised to dry up next month if the government shutdown drags on.
House Republicans unveiled legislation this week to fund SNAP, which provides assistance to more than 40 million Americans. It serves as a companion bill to a similar effort in the Senate, coming after Democratic officials in at least 25 states sued the Trump administration over the potential lapse in support.
The press conference will be led by Assistant Minority Leader Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) and Rep. Angie Craig (Minn.), the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee. It comes as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has pushed back against stand-alone bills as the GOP has failed to garner enough support to push a stopgap bill to reopen the government over the finish line.
The event is scheduled to begin at noon EDT.
