Smallest M Car, More Fun
BMW may have introduced a limited-run M2 Turbo Design Edition, but the automaker isn’t done celebrating its smallest M model just yet. The latest creation, called the BMW M2 Drift Competition, comes from BMW M’s ongoing partnership with the Red Bull Driftbrothers, and its debut video is anything but ordinary.
The short film features professional drifter Elias Hountondji sliding the 1,100-horsepower coupe through BMW’s Group Plant Munich, weaving past machinery, forklifts, and assembly lines in a display that borders on choreography.
Not CGI: Drifting Through the Factory
The stunt starts right at the main gate, with Hountondji behind the wheel of an incomplete M2 – missing its hood and front panels – before drifting straight through the factory doors. What follows is a blend of real precision driving and clever editing, as the car gets “rebuilt” on the move, picking up its hood, doors, trunk lid, and spoiler while continuing to slide across various factory floors. The route spans multiple levels, connected by an elevator, and features different surface types, each with its own grip challenges.
Hountondji described the project as one of the most complex stunts he’s ever done. Planning a drift route through active production lines demanded millimeter-level precision. A single mistake could have resulted in millions of dollars in damage and a complete production halt.
“I was always all focus because I knew what was at stake,” Hountondji said. The entire shoot was conducted under controlled conditions by professionals, combining entertainment value with BMW’s engineering confidence.

Building the “Ultimate Drift Machine”
The M2 Drift Competition is far from a stock 473-hp M2. Built from the ground up at the 229performance workshop, it’s based on a G82 chassis and powered by a heavily modified S58 twin-turbo straight-six making over 1,100 hp and 922 lb-ft of torque. Reinforced engine components, an upgraded cooling system, and bespoke suspension make it ready for top-tier drift competition. The exterior features a full carbon-fiber body kit, wide aero, and aggressive cooling ducts.
Hountondji will debut the car in the 2026 Drift Masters European Championship, but fans can see it earlier when it goes on display at BMW Welt in Munich from October 23 to November 5, 2025. The “factory drift” is both a marketing statement and a demonstration of what happens when BMW’s motorsport know-how meets creative freedom.
