- The new VS8 uses VW’s familiar MQB platform and has a 1.4-liter engine.
- Jetta will sell the new model alongside the VS7 and several other models.
- Chinese sales of the new model are expected to start later this year.
For most people in the West, the Jetta nameplate is tied almost entirely to Volkswagen’s long-running, somewhat understated sedan. In China, though, the story is a little different. Since 2019, Jetta has existed as its own standalone brand under the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture.
Now, it’s preparing to expand its lineup in China with the VS8, a mid-size SUV that’s similar in size to the current VS7 but features a design that sets it apart from anything Volkswagen offers in Western markets.

A teaser campaign for the VS8 just kicked off in China, though its moment of mystery didn’t last long. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has already released a full set of official images, giving an early look at the entire vehicle.
The SUV’s front grille is perhaps the highlight of the exterior styling. Painted to match the rest of the body, it extends neatly across the fascia with a simple cross-hatch pattern. Flanking the grille are modestly sized headlights connected by a thin LED light bar. Below, gloss black air curtains add a modern touch to the lower front bumper.
The side profile of the VS8 is uninspiring, although the tapered rear side windows and D-pillars do add a little drama. Found at the rear are angular taillights, a light bar, and a bumper that combines body-colored and black accents, including two black areas that would be perfect for accommodating quad tailpipes. Sadly, there’s likely only a single exhaust exiting from the underside of the new Jetta.
According to MIIT filings, the VS8 measures 4,629 mm (182 inches) in length, 1,851 mm (72.8 inches) in width, and 1,624 mm (63.9 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,631 mm (103.5 inches). It’s built on the familiar MQB platform, just like the VS7, and will come powered by a 1.4-liter TSI engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
An exact launch date has yet to be confirmed, though the VS8 is expected to reach the Chinese market before the year wraps up.
