- Volvo has confirmed plans to build the XC60 at their plant outside Charleston, South Carolina.
- Production is slated to begin late next year, enabling the popular crossover to avoid tariffs.
- Previous reports have suggested the XC90 could eventually be added to the plant.
Following a report yesterday, Volvo has confirmed plans to build the XC60 in the United States. The model was the brand’s second best-selling vehicle in America last year and it’s scheduled to go into production in late 2026. It will be built at the company’s Ridgeville, South Carolina plant, which currently makes the slow-selling EX90 and Polestar 3.
Volvo said surprisingly little about the move, but noted the plant will build both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the crossover. The company went on to say the XC60 is responsible for over 33% of their US sales as customers have snapped up 21,907 through June. That’s up 22.9% from last year and the model is currently surpassing the XC90 by 2,159 units.

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said, “Adding the XC60 to our Charleston production line will further strengthen its position and attractiveness in the competitive US market, while supporting and creating American manufacturing jobs.” It will also help the model to avoid steep tariffs, which is one of the primary reasons behind the move.
Samuelsson went on to say the decision to make the XC60 in the United States is “in line with our ambition to build where we sell and reinforces our long-term commitment to the US market, where we are celebrating our 70th anniversary and have sold over five million cars.”
His sentiments were echoed by Volvo Cars Americas President Luis Rezende, who said “The XC60 is already beloved around the world and in the US, and we’re proud we’ll soon be able to offer American families the XC60 they love, assembled here by American autoworkers.” He went on to call the crossover the “right car for this market.”
While Volvo was tight-lipped about details, the timeline for XC60 production is even faster than initially rumored. However, there’s no word on XC90 production, although a previous report suggested it would join the XC60 at the plant in October of 2028. There were also rumors about the ES90 being thrown into the mix, but only time will tell what happens.
