After teasing the X Fold 5 foldable for a while, Vivo finally launched the smartphone in its home market in China. It has arrived as the successor to the popular Vivo X Fold 3 that the brand launched in 2024. Similar to the X Fold 3, the X Fold 5 is also one of the slimmest and lightest book-style foldable to date.
Apart from the usual upgrades, Vivo’s latest foldable also gets deep compatibility with Apple’s ecosystem of devices, including iPhone, AirPods, MacBook, Apple Watch, and iCloud.
A thin, lightweight, and durable foldable smartphone
The Vivo X Fold 5 foldable smartphone tips the scale at 217grams and measures 9.2mm around the waist when folded and 4.3mm in the unfolded state. It comes with a handful of upgrades under the hood, but aesthetically, it is quite similar to the predecessor (review). However, the X Fold 5 is the only folding phone on the market that offers IPX8, IPX9, and IPX9+ waterproof levels. It can withstand the impact of 80-degree hot water and high-pressure water cannons, the brand claims.
Furthermore, it is the first folding smartphone to achieve IPX5 dust resistance, as per Vivo. Additionally, the brand claims the device can function even in minus 20 degrees Celsius environments.
Brings two AMOLED LTPO displays and gets the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC
Coming to other specs, the X Fold 5 has an 8.03-inch 2K+ AMOLED 8T LTPO main folding display, which offers up to a 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision support. The cover screen measures 6.53 inches and has a full HD+ AMOLED LTPO panel with up to 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, and Armor Glass.
Vivo has replaced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip with the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC on the latest foldable offering. Consumers can configure the device with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. Software-wise, the phone boots Android 15-based OriginOS 5.
For optics, Vivo has fitted the new X Fold offering with a triple rear camera unit with ZEISS’ T lens coating and two 20MP selfie cameras. A 50MP Sony IMX921 sensor with OIS headlines the rear setup. There’s a second 50MP ultra-wide camera with Samsung’s JN1 sensor. The third shooter is a 50MP Sony IMX822 3x periscope telephoto camera.
Coming to other highlights, the X Fold 5 has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for security. It packs major connectivity options, including 5G SA/NSA, dual (2.4GHz and 5GHz) band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.4 LE, dual-band GPS, NavIC, and NFC. Despite offering a lightweight body, Vivo has managed to fit a beefy 6,000mAh battery inside the new foldable. The power cell supports 80W fast charging, 40W wireless charging, and reverse charging capabilities.
First Android phone to connect to Apple Watch
Vivo’s X Fold 5 is the first Android smartphone to connect to an Apple Watch. Users can answer calls, view messages, and even seamlessly transfer tracked health data to the Vivo Health app. Vivo mentioned the phone is compatible with Apple’s diverse ecosystem, including iPhone, AirPods, MacBook, Apple Watch, and iCloud. Users can connect the foldable to their Apple devices and services to access their data seamlessly.
As for the pricing, Vivo has priced the X Fold 5 at nearly $975 for the base variant, which goes up to around $1,325 for the top-specced model. Vivo will start selling the phone in China from July 2nd, but hasn’t yet provided details regarding its availability in global markets.
