The 2025 Virginia attorney general race is slated to be the most expensive state attorney general race on record, according to the ad tracking company AdImpact.Â
A total of $36.8 million has been spent in the race so far, with Republicans spending $21.9 million and Democrats spending $14.9 million.Â
Last year’s attorney general race in North Carolina saw a total spend of $35.3 million, while $27.2 was spent in 2024 in the Pennsylvania AG race. In Texas’ 2022 race, $32.8 million was spent and $19.2 million was spent in Illinois’ attorney general race in 2019.
The Old Dominion State race became arguably the most watched in the state’s off-year election after a texting scandal involving Democratic nominee Jay Jones.Â
In the messages, which were sent to a Republican delegate in 2022, Jones openly talks about shooting the then-state House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R).
Jones has since apologized for the resurfaced remarks, but Republicans including President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have called on him to drop out of the race.Â
Polling suggests that the scandal has boosted Miyares’ chances at reelection.
A Washington Post/Schar School poll released last week showed Miyares and Jones tied at 46 percent support among likely voters. Meanwhile, a Virginia Commonwealth University poll shows Miyares leading Jones 45 percent to 42 percent.
