The big three carriers have been going back and forth for network supremacy for years now, and RootMetrics just dropped its H2 2025 State of the Mobile Union report. According to the testing, it found that Verizon is the best network in the country, taking home seven national awards including the big one for overall performance.
Verizon takes home best network award
According to the report, Verizon dominated RootMetrics’ latest testing. The carrier won the Overall RootScore Award for best network performance, which AT&T had claimed in the previous report. It also took the Reliability award, another category AT&T previously held. But where Verizon really separated itself was in 5G. The carrier also won Best 5G Experience, Fastest 5G, and Most Reliable 5G. Ironically enough, it wasn’t too long ago that Verizon suffered a major outage, in which its initial compensation to customers was honestly rather embarrassing.
In terms of raw numbers, Verizon recorded median download speeds of at least 200 Mbps in 104 cities, up from 92 cities in the first half of 2025. That’s quite a huge jump in just a span of six months. At the state and metro level, Verizon best network performance earned it 329 state awards and 801 metro awards. That’s actually more than either AT&T or T-Mobile managed to pull in.
AT&T and T-Mobile are still competitive
That being said, just because Verizon seemed to sweep all the awards doesn’t mean the other carriers aren’t good. AT&T didn’t completely fall behind. The carrier shared three national awards for Network Speed, Call Performance, and Text Performance. It also won or shared overall performance awards in 29 states. It also saw its metro award count go up from 592 to 648. AT&T’s 5G network also delivered median download speeds of at least 100 Mbps in 122 of its 125 tested markets, which is up from 116 previously.
Beautiful you’re looking for overall 5G availability, that’s where T-Mobile shines. The carrier remained the best at 95.2%, and it shared the Network Speed award with AT&T. The carrier boosted its state awards from 84 to 119 and its metro awards from 535 to 588. Lastly, T-Mobile remained the only carrier hitting at least 100 Mbps median speeds in all 125 markets. It even managed to hit speeds of 200 Mbps in 124 of them.
So while Verizon dominated the overall rankings, the gap between the three isn’t exactly massive in every category. All three carriers have their strengths. Just because Verizon might have won the “Overall performance” and “5G” award doesn’t necessarily make it the best network.
We get that some of you might prefer one over the other due to coverage, pricing, or just familiarity. But if maybe you’re looking for the “best,” then maybe this report could help you make that decision.
