Valve has confirmed that the RAM shortage is causing problems with keeping the Steam Deck OLED in stock, and has stated that the lack of RAM and storage components is the reason for the handheld’s disappearance from the Steam Store as a purchasable product. The Steam Deck will return one day, but that day is not today, nor will it likely be anytime in the immediate future.
The RAM shortage has caused a wide variety of problems across the consumer electronics industry. A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that Sony is rumored to be looking at pushing back the PS6 launch until as late as 2029 or 2030. GPUs have gone up in price. SSDs have gone up in price. And, of course, RAM is a lot more costly. All of this has led to a lower stock of items that contain these components. As well as higher prices on remaining stock in some cases.
Valve says the Steam Deck OLED will remain intermittently out of stock due to the RAM shortage
The Steam Deck OLED won’t be gone forever, but it’s not likely to be in stock soon either. Consumers looking to buy one in the US may have to wait a little while. As of right now, Valve has no stock of the 512GB or 1TB OLED models. The 256GB LCD model is also out of stock. The LCD model is also no longer in production. That means when Valve does have more of the Steam Deck to sell, the LCD model won’t be part of that.
Valve confirms that the Steam Deck OLED “may be out-of-stock intermittently in some regions due to memory and storage shortages.” There may be some regions that still have Steam Decks available. So, if you don’t have one and have wanted to pick one up, check your Steam Store.
If you can’t get a Steam Deck, there are alternatives. Lenovo’s Legion Go S is actually a great alternative to the Steam Deck because it comes in a Steam OS model. It’s also more powerful. You can still find stock of that at some retailers. So if you’re not stuck on Valve’s handheld, you still have options for the Steam OS experience.
