Android has long been ahead of iOS in terms of notification management. And now, a new report suggests Android 17 will bring a new feature called the ‘Notification Rules,’ which will widen the gap even further. The under-development feature could give users more precise control over alerts from apps and contacts. It will help them better manage interruptions and organize notifications in a smarter, more flexible way.
Google is working on a new Notification Rules feature for Android 17
As per Android Authority, early findings from the Android 17 Beta 3 update suggest Google is working on a new ‘Notification Rules’ feature for the system. This feature appears to allow users to create custom rules based on specific apps or individual contacts. If true, it would mark a major shift toward more detailed and personalized notification control in the Android ecosystem.
The feature is expected to include options for searching and selecting apps or people, along with tools to quickly select or deselect entries. Once rules are created, users can assign actions such as Silence, Block, Silence and Bundle, Highlight, or Highlight and Alert. While silencing and blocking are already available, the addition of bundling and highlighting suggests a more advanced system for organizing alerts.
Users will gain more precise control over notifications on their phones
One of the main advantages of Notification Rules is the ability to manage alerts from specific people without fully blocking them. For instance, users could silence calls or messages from certain contacts without affecting overall call settings. This adds a layer of flexibility that current notification tools lack.
Further, the feature also seems to have ‘Highlights’ and ‘Highlights with Alerts’ options. However, the exact function of both of these options remains unknown for now. Reports also indicate that traces of this feature have appeared in One UI builds. This indicates that it may not be limited to Pixel devices. Google has not officially confirmed the feature. Though its presence in development signals ongoing work.
