Vivo is getting ready to trump the competition when it comes to multitasking on foldable devices, including OnePlus’ Open Canvas solution. The change will be ushered in with the Vivo X Fold 5, actually.
Vivo is aiming to reinvent multitasking on foldables and trump OnePlus
This new feature is called ‘Atomic Workbench’, and it was demoed by Vivo’s Product Manager, Han Boxiao. Do note that the name has been translated from Chinese, it could be called differently on a global variant of the phone.
In any case, you can see the video demo below. Unlike OnePlus’ Open Canvas, which allows you to open two apps on the screen, with the third one tucked away on the side for quick access. Atomic Workbench allows you to run five on the screen.
Yes, you read that right, five. In the provided video demo, Han Boxiao is running the Honor of Kings game as the main app, while four smaller cards are placed above it. If you tap any of those cards, that app will become the main app on the screen.
Cards will change places based on the type of app you’re running
Now, depending on the orientation a specific app requires, other cards will adjust their position and size. If you launch a portrait app, the cards go to the left side of the screen, it seems.
You’ll also notice an app bar at the bottom of the screen. We presume that you’ll be able to drag and drop any of those apps into any of the slots on the screen to quickly change your setup. If you tap the all apps button on that bar, you can access any app, basically. That is not shown in the video demo, however.
Unlike OnePlus, Vivo decided to focus on one app mainly, and offer four quick options in addition to it. OnePlus, on the other hand, focuses on two apps and offers one as an extra. Both are great options.
The Vivo X Fold 5 will become official on June 25 in China. It will be quite powerful and very thin. We do expect its global variant to arrive at some point as well. As a side note, Google is also bringing improved multitasking on foldables with Android 16.
