- Toyota is reportedly working on a hardcore Tundra.
- Could be called the TRD Hammer and have 37-inch tires.
- Truck is rumored to have an upgraded hybrid powertrain.
Rugged trucks are big business and Ram recently expanded their 1500 lineup to include a new BackCountry variant. It joins a dizzying array of other models including the Warlock, Rebel, RHO, and SRT TRX.
That stands in stark contrast to the Toyota Tundra, which has multiple upscale trims but just a single off-roader. However, the TRD Pro could soon be joined by a new model known as the TRD Hammer.

According to The Drive, the upcoming truck will be “badass” and have 37-inch tires. The publication also pointed to an earlier owner’s survey that implied the “high-performance truck” would have unique fender flares, high-clearance bumpers, and a long-travel suspension.
More interestingly, the company appears to be testing a prototype out in the open as Toyota’s research and development team competed in the Mint 400 with the Hybrid Toyota Tundra Racing truck. While automakers typically promote their motorsport activities, Toyota has remained silent.
That suggests something’s up and insiders have told the publication it’s a rugged truck aimed at the “meat of the off-road truck segment.” While it won’t go head to head with the TRX or Raptor R, it could battle the lesser RHO and Raptor.
To help its odds, the Tundra TRD Hammer will reportedly have an upgraded hybrid powertrain. There’s no word on specifics, but the current model offers an i-Force Max powertrain that consists of a twin-turbo 3.5-liter (3,445 cc) V6, a 1.87 kWh nickel-metal hydride battery, and an electric motor that develops 48 hp (36 kW / 49 PS) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque. The latter is effectively sandwiched between the engine and the ten-speed automatic transmission.
This setup gives the truck a combined output of 437 hp (326 kW / 443 PS) and 583 lb-ft (790 Nm) of torque. Those are respectable numbers, but they trail the RHO by a considerable margin as Ram’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six produces 540 hp (403 kW / 548 PS) and 521 lb-ft (706 Nm) of torque. The powertrain is also a mixed bag compared to the Raptor’s rating of 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS) and 510 lb-ft (691 Nm).
