When you think of Apple, what comes to mind? If you said expensive and overpriced products, we get it. But Apple is also known for its design. As expensive and overpriced as their products are, you cannot deny there’s a certain beauty in their design. Well, now it looks like Apple CEO Tim Cook will be overseeing the design of their products moving forward.
Apple CEO oversees the design team
Apple has announced a slight restructuring of the company. Right now, the Apple design team reports to the company’s COO, Jeff Williams. However, Williams recently announced his retirement later in the year, and so, the Apple design team will transition to reporting directly to Tim Cook.
According to Cook’s statement, “Jeff and I have worked alongside each other for as long as I can remember, and Apple wouldn’t be what it is without him. He’s helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world; launched Apple Watch and overseen its development; architected Apple’s health strategy; and led our world-class team of designers with great wisdom, heart, and dedication.”
While Cook will be overseeing the design team, Williams is expected to pass on his other roles and responsibilities to Sabih Khan, Apple’s senior vice president of Operations. “I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Sabih for 27 years and I think he’s the most talented operations executive on the planet. I have tremendous confidence in Apple’s future under his leadership in this role,” says Williams.
What does this mean for Apple?
Williams has been overseeing Apple’s design team since 2023. Jony Ive initially led Apple’s design team, but after he left in 2019, that role went to Evans Hankey. Hankey later left in 2022, but instead of replacing him outright, Apple chose to pass on those responsibilities to Williams.
It is unclear what reporting directly to Cook means. Apple is currently in the midst of revamping some of its products. This includes the recently announced iOS 26, which introduces a brand new “Liquid Glass” design. This is the most radical revamp to iOS since iOS 7.
Apple is also rumored to be working on an iPhone for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, which is rumored to be a “mostly glass” affair. Unless Cook plans on taking a more micromanagerial approach, for the most part, we expect things to remain relatively stable.
