The algorithm for social media is quite straightforward. Based on how long you interact with a post, comment, share, or like, it will assume that is a topic you are interested in. From there, it will attempt to recommend similar content like it. Does it always get it right? Most of the time. But if you want more control over it, Meta has announced a new “Dear Algo” feature for Threads.
Threads gets AI-powered Dear Algo feature
According to Meta, Dear Algo is a new AI-powered feature that is rolling out to Threads. Like we said, it is powered by AI and that means that you can use text prompts to basically tell the algorithm what you want to see.
For example, if you want to see more content about sports, cooking, and gardening, you can tell the AI that. All you have to do is create a new public Threads post and type “Dear Algo” followed by your request. After that, the AI will adjust your feed accordingly. However, this isn’t a permanent change.

Meta says that the AI will only adjust your feed for three days. We’re not sure what happens after. Does it mean that after that it reverts back to the original algorithm? Will your liking and interacting with posts during these three days affect the main algorithm? Meta wasn’t very forthcoming about that. However, the company says that the goal of the feature is to allow users to stay connected to the most current conversations.
We imagine that it will be useful for staying up to date on politics, news, and sporting events, where you might prefer seeing fresh content instead of stuff that was posted a week, a month, or half a year ago.
Rolling out to users in the US
At the moment, Meta says that the new feature is available to Threads users in the US. The feature was previously in testing in New Zealand and Australia, before expanding to the UK. The company says that it hopes to eventually expand the feature to other parts of the world. We have to say that it is actually a pretty cool feature. It’s almost as if Meta wants to give users more control over what they see.

In fact, Meta is allowing users to share their Dear Algo requests publicly. This means that you can see what requests other users are making and copy it. Maybe you’ll find new content that you like. Maybe with this change, Threads could continue to maintain its lead over X when it comes to daily mobile users.
