- JLR is recalling nearly 21,000 Range Rover Evoques over a passenger airbag issue.
- 2021-2025 models may have a passenger airbag that can rip during deployment.
- The company says it is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the defect.
Airbags are a quintessential safety feature and they’ve saved more than 50,000 lives in the United States alone. However, there has been a troubling number of airbag-related recalls in recent years.
The latest comes from Land Rover, which is recalling 20,999 Range Rover Evoques from the 2021-2025 model years. The luxury crossovers are equipped with passenger airbags that may tear during deployment. This increases the risk of injury during a crash and the government also noted a torn airbag may allow hot gasses to escape during deployment, which may burn occupants.
Review: Is Range Rover’s Evoque Still Worth The Hype In A Crowded Market?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says abnormal airbag deployments were discovered during testing and this sparked an investigation in May of 2023. The joint-effort, which included Jaguar Land Rover as well as two suppliers, initially found no defects or risks to safety.
However, the investigation continued and eventually discovered a “variability in the folds of the airbag.” This was determined to be a “likely contribution” to the abnormal airbag deployments and deemed an “unreasonable safety risk.”
Out of an abundance of caution, Jaguar Land Rover decided to conduct a recall, although the automaker isn’t aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue. The fix is relatively straightforward as dealers will replace the passenger airbag module and associated components. Owner notifications are slated to go out in late August.
