Restomods are more popular than ever. Modern manufacturing processes, CAD, and other tech make what seemed like fanciful dreams totally possible now. One excellent example of that is about to go across the auction block in Florida. It’s a 1968 Ford Mustang fastback that’s old-school cool on the outside and new-school sporty under the sheet metal.

Up for sale at Mecum’s Florida Summer Special 2025, this car has 2,695 miles on it. Under the hood is a 5.0-liter V8. The body features a stunning Gulf Racing livery, hand-built front wheel flares, and Kingdig-it Design recessed door handles. It’s a gorgeous beast that’ll still fly under the radar despite its bright paint scheme. That’s because there’s so much more lurking under the surface.
Power with Precision
According to Ford, this 5.0-liter V8, dubbed the Aluminator XS, makes over 500 horsepower, has an 11.0:1 compression ratio, and leverages Mahle forged pistons. It’s built to take a beating – and then some. It sends that power to the rear wheels via a Tremec six-speed manual gearbox, an 8.8-inch rear end, CCW wheels, and sticky BF Goodrich tires.
Griggs Racing suspension parts keep the car flat around curves, Wilwood disc brakes help it stop after it gets going, and a rollcage with removable sidebars ensures that even if things go really wrong, the occupants won’t have body panels encroaching on their space. Speaking of that, it’s as modernized (albeit in tasteful ways) as the drivetrain is.
The gauges are from Classic Instruments and feature custom colors. The HVAC system is a reliable Vintage Air unit. A Sony sound system comes complete with a modern head unit and a subwoofer behind the occupants. Leather upholstered bucket seats and safety harnesses keep those folks snugly in place, and a fire suppression system adds one more layer of safety.
If all of the above sounds appealing to you, check out the full auction listing here. It’s tough to say what it’ll go for, but we don’t expect it to be a bargain when the hammer falls on July 12 at Mecum’s Florida Summer Special.
