In the world of M.2 NVMe SSDs, one that’s currently in the running to reign supreme if you only judge the specs is the WD_Black SN8100, which now comes with a whopping 8TB of storage space. So, now you can feel comfortable about never running out of room. Capable of read speeds up to 14,900 MB/s and write speeds of up to 13,200 MB/s, it’s got slightly faster read speeds than Samsung’s 9100 Pro and slightly slower write speeds. It also matches the speed on random read, which is up to 2,200K IOPS, while random write speed is up to 2,400K IOPS compared to the 9100 Pro’s 2,600K. So, on paper, these are pretty neck and neck.
What Samsung had going for it was that it released its 8TB 9100 Pro close to a month ago. This gave it a tiny bit of a head start, but Western Digital wasn’t far behind, as it launched the 8TB SN8100 this week. Unsurprisingly, consumers wanting to pick one of these up will be looking at having to drop a hefty chunk of change to get one.
The WD_Black SN8100 8TB SSD will set you back $999.99
If you’ve seen the Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB and what it was retailing for at launch, then this price shouldn’t shock you in the slightest. A price of $999.99 for the 8TB SSD is pretty standard, even though not many NVMe SSDs have been released with this much capacity; the ones that have been released have all been around this price at launch. That being said, Samsung’s 9100 Pro is now on sale for $899.99, making it just a bit cheaper for a likely similar experience.
If you’re a WD_Black loyalist, you can snag one of the new 8TB SN8100 SSDs with or without a heatsink. The heatsink model retails for $1,049.99. As for where you can buy it, the 8TB model only appears to be available directly from the SanDisk website. Although you can pick up the 4TB model on Amazon.
