Cast iron and aluminum alloy have long been the most common materials for blocks, pistons, cylinder heads, and other major components inside an engine. Nissan filed a patent a couple of years back for a carbon fiber engine block, while magnesium alloys, usually employed in the low-stress parts of the block, aren’t completely unheard of.
