Ever since TikTok US fell under control of its new American owners, things haven’t been the same. For starters, the app saw daily users drop to between 86 and 88 million, down from the usual 92 million. Then, there was the outage that reset the feeds of some users and prevented other users from uploading their videos. If it looked like this was going to be the downfall of the platform, think again because, according to Similarweb, TikTok recovered usage to over 90 million daily active users.
TikTok recovers its usage
Based on the numbers from Similarweb, the drop experienced by TikTok appeared to be temporary. The app, which lost as much as 4-6 million daily active users following new ownership and technical issues, managed to regain its momentum. This suggests that users who might have previously left the platform have returned.
For a moment, it seemed like things were going south for TikTok. For starters, the outage did not help at all. Yes, we know that sometimes online services do go down. However, the timing was suspect. It happened during the Minneapolis riots, which led some to speculate that censorship was at play here.
California Governor Gavin Newsom fanned the flames further, with his office claiming to have “independently confirmed instances” of content critical of US President Donald Trump being suppressed. TikTok has denied those claims. The company later confirmed that this was due to the winter storm, which caused a power outage and network and storage issues.
Secondly, after being acquired by an American entity, TikTok’s new privacy policy in the US had some worried, as it appeared to collect even more data on users than before. All of this allowed TikTok alternatives like UpScrolled and Skylight to see an influx of new users. But now, maybe none of this matters.
How TikTok survived
It’s not surprising that TikTok managed to recover its user base. There are plenty of content creators out there who make a living off TikTok. This means that these people are the ones least likely to abandon ship, because it would mean starting over from scratch. Also, while there are TikTok alternatives out there, the content isn’t quite the same.
TikTok’s algorithm is what made the app so addictive and popular to begin with. Unless these alternative platforms can recreate that, it would be a tough sell. Perhaps given time, we could see a more viable alternative appear. But for now, it looks like TikTok is still the champion.
