Nintendo Switch 2 production is reportedly being decreased as a result of fewer sales of the console in the US market. The Switch 2 launched in 2025 and was pretty popular considering the lack of big launch games and the higher price. For example, the original Nintendo Switch launched with Breath of the Wild. This is officially a Wii-U game as it was launched as the last officially published title for that console. However, it was ported to Switch and was available at launch, which wasn’t long after the game released. The Switch 2 didn’t have anything like that, but it has still done well in the time it’s been available.
However, interest for the console among US consumers has apparently declined, leading to Nintendo’s decision to cut production of the Switch 2. While it isn’t mentioned, it would make sense for Nintendo to ramp up production again in the future if demand starts to increase. And that’s entirely possible. The console hasn’t been out a year yet, and there still hasn’t been a massive first-party game release. Once that happens, it’s probable that demand for the console will go back up.
Nintendo will cut Switch 2 production by about 30%
According to a report by Bloomberg (via The Verge), Nintendo plans to cut production of Switch 2 units this year by 30%, which will reduce the overall total number of consoles being made this quarter from 6 million to 4 million. Nintendo expected demand to be higher, but reduced interest has shifted its expectations. That being said, Nintendo still expects to meet its target of selling 19 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of the fiscal year.
Nintendo’s current fiscal year ends on March 31, so it has about a week left to meet that target, if it hasn’t already done so. Despite lower interest from US consumers, Nintendo’s Switch 2 broke sales records for the company when it launched, and this could be a major factor why interest has declined, because a lot of consumers who were interested have already bought one.
