1990s nostalgia is at its peak right now. Older Millennials are coming into their prime earning years, aging, and yearning for their youth. Italdesign will provide, and in spades, to the wealthiest Gen X and Millennials seeking a little taste of their Good Ol’ Days by way of an iconic car from that era: the Acura NSX.
An NSX Revival Is In The Works
Italdesign is famed for its wild, bespoke creations, from its collaborations with brands like Caterham to its reimaginings of iconic and stunning cars from years past. The brand made its intentions clear last month, with a simple announcement: “A tribute to an iconic car. More to come.”
The above teaser is our second hint at the brand’s intentions, showing the usual: a shadowy silhouette of the intended car with a few clues to let everyone know what to expect. You can look for yourself above. However, it isn’t clear what extremes Italdesign will go to, but allegedly, the brand has Honda’s blessing for this project. The car is heavily trademarked, and we’re sure that Italdesign, which is owned by the Volkswagen Group, would need special permission from the automaker to go ahead with the project.
What To Expect From Italdesign’s NSX
BH Auction
A few design elements are for certain: the Italdesign NSX will take influence from the rare NSX-R GT, making use of some sort of snorkel to feed air into the engine. That likely means the car will use internal combustion to some degree, but we’re not sure if this will be a hybrid like the model’s most recent iteration. The other certainty is the car’s unique lighting element. On classic NSX models, the lighting arrangement does not run up onto the car’s rear wing. This will feature LEDs outlining the wing and rear deck lid.
Given the car’s snorkel, we’re fairly confident a six-cylinder powertrain will be at play. Italdesign does use the word “tribute,” so perhaps a modified version of the car’s original naturally-aspirated V6 will make an appearance. No matter what, you can expect a redefined interior space and bespoke bodywork, as is typical for the firm. Of course, all this will also come with a stratospheric price point. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but we’re sure the next teaser will at least come with some indication of a timeline. For now, there’s naught but shadowy outlines to go off of.
