Sony’s PlayStation Portal continues to get better with age and its latest update only further adds to the handheld’s appeal, thanks to the addition of a new 1080p resolution option. The update should be available as of today for everyone who owns a Portal, and if you’re planning on getting one, Sony is also improving the initial setup.
One of the complaints that some users had when this device first launched was regarding onboarding. While not terribly difficult to deal with, it wasn’t as convenient as it could be. Today’s update changes that too. Sony says the onboarding experience with the Portal is now improved. Specifically, you can quickly scan the on-screen QR code to either sign in or create an account with PlayStation using the camera on your mobile device. Sony already allows sign-in by scanning a QR code for other platforms, so this is a nice touch.
The PlayStation Portal will now support streaming in 1080p high quality
Once you have the update installed on your PlayStation Portal, you’ll see a new resolution option for streaming. 1080p was already available but this was for standard quality, and it prioritized more stable performance. With this update, there’s now an option for 1080p High Quality. This will prioritize higher video quality, but it will also eat up more data.
If you’re not set up with unlimited data that doesn’t have a throttle cap, you will want to watch your data usage more closely if you plan to use this resolution option. But, your games should look better. Provided your network can actually handle the streaming. Sony also says it refined the cloud streaming experience.
Game invites in supported titles are now easier to see thanks to updated notifications. Plus, there are now enhanced trophy notifications as well as an improved search screen. Sony initially started rolling this update out on March 17, and it’s a global update, so it should be available to everyone. If not immediately, by the end of this week most likely.
As far as updates go, it’s not as big as when Sony added the ability to play games from the cloud. That update really revolutionized the handheld. It’s still a good addition though.
