Fifty years ago, American sculptor Alexander Calder went to work painting an E9 BMW 3.0 CSL before it went to race at Le Mans, and the BMW Art Car was born. The race car only managed to compete for seven hours, but it started off a chain of, currently, 20 art cars painted by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Julie Mehretu, Jeff Koons, and, of course, Andy Warhol. However, you won’t be able to see all 20 cars at once. Over the year-long schedule, they’ll be traveling either alone or in groups – presumably the risk of them all being moved around in a single group is too risky.
