Companies like Samsung and TSMC are racing to bring forth 2nm processors. However, it seems that the latter is further ahead. TSMC is gearing up to manufacture 2nm processors, and the iPhone 18 might be the first device to use them.
The science behind this can get pretty complex. However, the gist of it is that the smaller the process, the better the chip, essentially. Chips with smaller processes can squeeze in more transistors. This allows the chips to be more dense, and it reduces the amount of energy it takes for electrons to travel between the transistors.
Companies have been pouring a ton of effort into reducing the size as much as possible. Just a few years ago, chips with 7nm processes were considered top of the line. We are at the dawn of the 2nm processor age.
The iPhone 18 could be the first phone with a 2nm processor
Even though the jump between 3nm and 2nm is pretty small (which is true, as we’re literally dealing with nanoscopic distances), the performance gains are pretty significant. This is why Apple wants to get in early and make next year’s iPhone lead the charge.
TSMC, the world’s most popular chipmaker, could start manufacturing 2nm chips as early as late 2025. It seems that Apple has struck a deal to use that process for the Apple A20 chip, which will power the iPhone 18. If that happens, there’s no telling how powerful that phone will be. Apple’s phones are already extremely powerful, so a chip with a 2nm process could make the iPhone 18 uncatchable.Â
We’re also certain that this additional power will come in handy for AI processing. Other than that, we’re not sure how else this additional power will present itself to iPhone users. iPhones are already extremely smooth, so average users won’t see much of a difference with their day-to-day usage.
Along with the new 2nm process, a report states that Apple will also move from the InFo (Integrated Fan-Out) packaging to WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging technology. This switch will also impact the performance and efficiency. The iPhone 18 looks like it will be in a completely different league when it launches next year.
