Just like the cute and boxy Suzuki Jimny, the Volkswagen Tiguan R is forbidden fruit in America despite the Mk8 Golf R, a hot hatch it shares engine with, being sold here. Introduced in 2020, the Tiguan R didn’t just get a more potent power plant, it also received performance enhancements, making it worth being called a true performance SUV. With the new-generation Tiguan arriving in the U.S. earlier this year, it’s time to wonder whether an R version of the German SUV will happen again.
