Whatever Happened to Full-Sized Wagons?
We’re trying to think which car was the last true full-sized station wagon ever made. Our best answer is the Chevrolet Caprice Wagon and Buick Roadmaster Estate, and those were last sold in 1996. For nearly 30 years, no one has really made big wagons, and luxury automakers don’t really make practical versions of their flagship sedans.
Unless you send them to coachbuilders, wagon versions of the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, or Mercedes-Benz S-Class simply don’t exist. Perhaps it’s too niche a market, but it’s cool to see, nonetheless. But, all of a sudden, here comes Genesis with a rather neat concept.

Meet the G90 Wingback
The G90 Wingback was the second surprise Genesis unveiled during the launch of the G70 Magma in France. It was shown alongside the Magma GT Concept, itself a car that’s slated for production soon. It appears Genesis is keen to build the G90 Wingback for real, too, as it looks production-ready.
In concept form at least, it’s a hot wagon with a low stance and fat fenders. It appears to be an RS6 Avant or M5 Touring fighter, but given that it’s based on the G90, it’s as long as an S-Class. Who would’ve thought Genesis would come up with such a thing? Should it reach showrooms, it will be the second Genesis wagon model, the first being the not-available-in-the-US G70 Shooting Brake. Thanks, crossovers.

There’s More Good News
One can easily dismiss it as a design study, but Genesis’ chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke said they’re interested in selling it to the public. Okay, it might lose the sporty bits and those aggressively flared arches, but the fact that the company says it’s feasible is a positive sign.
According to Jalopnik, Donckerwolke said the Wingback can be built quickly with relatively minimal expense. The length and wheelbase are the same as the sedan, and it appears to be built on the standard wheelbase model’s floorpan. It was also said that there is, indeed, a strong market for hot wagons — surprisingly so in the US.

More G90 Body Styles Coming?
The Wingback isn’t the first time Genesis toyed with the idea of expanding the G90 model range. Back in April, Genesis showcased the G90 X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible during the Seoul Mobility Show. It looked production-ready, and the company hinted that it’s considering bringing those two stunning concepts into production.
That said, the G90 isn’t exactly a volume-seller, but that could work to its advantage. Full-size vehicles that aren’t SUVs or crossovers aren’t selling these days, but Genesis has all the potential to turn it into a profitable niche. Full-sized personal luxury cars and wagons, anyone? Yes, please.
