Samsung is apparently working on an even wider Galaxy Z Fold for next year. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 did get quite a bit wider and is now about the same aspect ratio as most smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to have a second model that will be even wider. It’s said to have a 18:9 aspect ratio for the front display, so not quite as wide as the Google Pixel Fold or the OPPO Find N2.
With using an 18:9 aspect ratio for the front, that means the inner display would be a perfect square at 18:18.
This info comes from a GSMA listing, which shows the model number SM-F971, which was initially believed to be the Galaxy Z Flip 8 FE, but instead it lines up more closely with the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 (SM-F976).
Disclaimer: It’s important to note that just because a model pops up in this GSMA database, it does not mean it is actually going to launch. Companies do many prototypes before finalizing a product. So take this with a grain of salt.
This is likely going to be part of Samsung’s dual-fold strategy for next year. Right now, it’s unclear if this would be a high-end foldable from Samsung or perhaps more of an “FE” model that would be a bit cheaper. And considering Samsung doesn’t usually announce its foldables until July, we still have about eight months to figure that out.
A cheaper foldable could really expand the market
One major complaint that a lot of people have with foldables, particularly book-style foldables, is the price. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is priced at $1,999. Now, it’s rarely ever actually that price, as Samsung routinely has discounts going on – it was just $1,599 for Black Friday. But that’s quite a bit of cash for a phone.
However, if this second foldable is say, a Galaxy Z Fold 8 FE, and comes in a bit cheaper, maybe at $1599, that might change things. Sure it’s still pretty pricey, but the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL are both $1199 while the Galaxy S25 Ultra is $1299. So it’s not as big of a step up as the $1999 Galaxy Z Fold 7 is.
Also keep in mind that Samsung is looking to increase foldable sales by 10% with the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 8 series next year. So a second book-style foldable at a cheaper price would definitely help with that.
