The GLC has been a part of Mercedes-Benz’s SUV lineup for a while now, but it’s about to receive one of its most significant updates yet. The automaker recently announced the new electric GLC with EQ Technology, debuting the first vehicle in its catalog to feature its new design language.
Mercedes didn’t go into great detail about the GLC’s powertrain and performance, focusing instead on its interior design and tech. The centerpiece of the new cabin is the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system, which stretches the width of the dash, the largest display ever fitted in a Mercedes vehicle. It’s powered by more than 1,000 individual LEDs, which enables “zone dimming,” allowing users to focus on one part of the display.
Using ambient interior lighting, the GLC creates interior “moods,” including calm, intense, cool, emotional, and more. Each motif changes the interior lighting colors, gauge cluster displays, and more, and passengers control the system through the infotainment screen. The interior lights also work with the climate control system, providing visual feedback for temperature changes and other settings. The electric GLC comes with two smartphone charging trays, metal interior accents, and physical buttons for critical vehicle functions, such as the hazard lights.
The Hyperscreen system will be optional, and Mercedes didn’t share images of the smaller standard display, so we don’t have a full picture of the new GLC’s interior yet. That said, the electric GLC’s cabin isn’t a copy-and-paste job from the gas model’s interior, offering unique cupholders, materials, and design.
The GLC will have a built-in competitor when it arrives, as the BMW iX3 was also recently announced. It offers more than 400 miles of range and similar levels of tech. Previous Mercedes EVs came under the EQ name, but the automaker is shifting away from that structure to more familiar model names, such as the GLC, although its name is anything but elegant. The automaker plans to fully reveal the SUV at the IAA Mobility show in Munich on September 7, so the wait for more details won’t be long. It’s expected to arrive late in 2026 as a 2027 model.
