
The downsizing trend has hit the automotive industry hard, and many renowned V8 engines have been replaced with six- or four-cylinder turbocharged engines. It’s having a profound effect on the American automotive market, which is more intimately connected to the V8 than any other country on earth. Ford made the vee-shaped engine popular with the Flathead V8 option for the Model B in 1933, which cost just $10 more than the four-cylinder engine ($240 in today’s money).
