While modern turbocharged engines are engineering marvels, given that they can be smaller and lighter than equivalent naturally aspirated units, and all the while being more powerful and efficient, they have their drawbacks. For one, the addition of a turbocharger means there is one more expensive component that can go wrong, and the purity of the driving experience of the vehicles it’s fitted to is also affected. A turbocharged engine suffers from turbo lag, which presents itself as hesitation when you hit the throttle when off-boost.
