The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz has secured a 5-Star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), giving the electric people-carrier the highest score available under the agency’s New Car Assessment Program. The rating reflects strong performance across frontal, side and rollover tests, supported by VW’s latest structural engineering and its full suite of standard driver-assistance systems.
The result places the ID. Buzz alongside VW’s safest models and arrives at a critical moment for the brand, which is facing financial uncertainty and pressure on future investment plans.

Safety Systems and Driver Assistance
Volkswagen says the ID. Buzz’s top rating reflects a combination of structural protection and a wide suite of active-safety technology fitted as standard. Every model includes six airbags, Automatic Post-Collision Braking and the full IQ.DRIVE package, bringing features such as Travel Assist, Front Assist, Side Assist, Lane Assist, Rear Traffic Alert and Emergency Assist. Park Assist Plus with Memory Parking and an Exit Warning system are also included.
The 5-Star score puts the ID. Buzz in the same bracket as VW’s safest models, including the latest Tiguan. NHTSA established the star system in 1978 to give buyers a clear measure of crash performance, and the ID. Buzz now sits at the very top of the scale.

How the ID. Buzz Fits Into VW’s Lineup
With the ID. Buzz now joining the 2025 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, ID.4, Jetta, Jetta GLI and Tiguan on the 5-Star list, Volkswagen’s safety credentials span both combustion and electric models. The brand has been positioning the ID. Buzz as a family-friendly EV with nostalgic appeal, blending the Microbus silhouette with modern crash protection and semi-automated driving capability.
Its success contrasts with some of VW’s current challenges, including the mixed reception to certain global design directions, like the unusual styling of its newest China-only EV. Still, safety consistency remains a bright spot across its expanding range.

Why the Rating Matters
The ID. Buzz is one of VW’s most recognisable new models and a key pillar of its EV strategy. Earning a top NHTSA score gives it a significant advantage in the U.S., where large family-focused electric vehicles are scrutinised for crash-worthiness, rollover stability and driver-assistance reliability.
For buyers, the 5-Star rating means the ID. Buzz meets the highest federal safety standard available. For Volkswagen, navigating global market pressures, evolving EV demand and financial headwinds, this result strengthens its message that safety remains central to its brand identity.
