The history of cars stretches back over a century, all the way to the famous Benz-Patent Motorwagen in 1886, the first production car ever built and the model that gave origin to Mercedes-Benz. Some car companies, however, are even older than that first car. Many brands we commonly think of as automakers today started out producing different kinds of goods, then switched to car production later.
